store snedriver og frostsprængning af fast fjeld pga. nedsivende smeltevand samt laviner. Nivation sidestilles med glaciation, der bredt omfatter alle processer knyttet til gletsjere. Tidligere definitioner af nivation var mere snævre og omfattede som regel kun processer knyttet til snelejer.
